All I ask is a little bit of [blank]…

It’s all a bit tricky at the moment, so they tell me. Whatever you want to call it - the recession, the credit crunch, the crash, the complete END OF THE WORLD mayhem - it’s meaning that my cash flow situation isn’t quite all it could be. I’ve even had to indulge in payday loans from time to time, just to keep things on an even keel.

The thing is though, I’m starting to find that friends and family are becoming surprisingly positive even in the midst of all this mayhem. People who’ve not spoken to each other for years are getting in touch, popping over to each others'houses for a cheap bottle of wine, catching up, becoming reconciled. It’s cheesy but kind of poetic.

It’s a horrible old cliche to say how adversity can bring people together. But it seems to be true in this case. And I was wondering what I can do to try and make people feel happier - what the German poet Bertolt Brecht called “singing in the dark times”. I thought I might start by phoning my mum more, something that recently I’ve not been very good at. This has been going well although it does mean updating her on my relationship status (or lack thereof) more often than I’d like. But next I think I’ll start doing something properly good, like helping old ladies across the road more, or giving more food to the homeless. Or maybe I’ll start calling my sister more often as well!
