My opinion’s better than your opinion

As a regular, every-day kind of English bloke, I’m probably a bit like you: I keep my opinions to myself. Well, I usually do, until the other day, when I found myself embroiled in a big fat argument at the bus stop.

It was their fault, not mine, honest guv!

When I arrived at the bus-stop there were all the usual crowd there. Then, five minutes later, three youths with hoodies on appeared. And it was all fine until they stopped listening to their music – which was bad enough – and started to swear.

Now, I am not a prude. I wouldn’t consider myself to be really into swearing either. The point, though, is this: there is a time and a place and this was neither. The swearing was offending people left and right, and you could tell. Everyone was staring at the floor.

I’d had enough, so I said “excuse me lads, but do you need to swear so loudly right here?”

I swear that every pair of eyes fell on me and they all took a step back.

The swearingest of the youths stepped up to me: “what is it to you mate?”

I said, “it’s nothing to me, but it’s something to all of us together,” and that was what sparked it off. The lads against me.

But the argument didn’t last long, because fortunately a few others stepped in before I got my head kicked in.

The moral of this story? It’s good to stand up for yourself, just be sure to do it when there are loads of witnesses standing around and you’re not carrying some designer homeware home to the missus…
